MANILA, Philippines – Low cost carrier AirAsia Inc. will start flying to Hong Kong from Clark International Airport in July.
“We will fly once daily to Hong Kong in July. This will be our second international destination since we got our AOC (air operator certificate) last February,” AirAsia chief executive officer Marianne Hontiveros said,
Philippines’ AirAsia launched its domestic flights last March and will start its first overseas flight to Malaysia on June 9.
“We have plans to also fly to Singapore. That’s in the works. We are also looking at Bangkok, Korea, points in China and Macau. If we can get the Category 2 status lifted, we want to fly to Japan as well,” said Hontiveros yesterday.
AirAsia is a 60-40 joint venture between Filipino investors Antonio O. Cojuangco, Michael L. Romero and Hontiveros, and Malaysia’s AirAsia International Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of AirAsia Berhad.
Hontiveros said it expects the delivery of 2 more Airbus A320 in November and December.
“We have two now and we expect two more coming in later this year. We were supposed to take delivery of that but we gave it instead to (AirAsia) Japan because plans to launch flights to some points in China were put on hold,” she explained.
The low-cost carrier initially targeted to fly 857,000 passengers on its first year of operations. However, Hontiveros admitted this may not be achievable, since it only has 3 domestic destinations and will launch 2 regional destinations in June and July.
“But we are working hard to achieve the numbers,” she said.
AirAsia has tapped leading travel technology and transaction processor Amadeus for a new travel booking tool. Amadeus LCC Smart will allow travel agencies to easily book AirAsia using a web-like interface in the Amadeus global distribution system.
